In June 2006 the South West Netball Region called a meeting to discuss the possibility of starting a Netball competition by forming a partnership with the South West Football League and aligning the competition with the football fixtures based on a concept used very successfully in the Eastern States and in the Central Wheatbelt of WA. This was the start of the South West Netball Football League.

The aim of the competition was to take netball back into country towns where football was strong and netball waning. By bringing both sports under the one umbrella and promoting the sharing of resources and facilities the Region hoped to increase the participation levels of netball and instil a sense of community spirit by working together as a team.

A League Co-ordinator was appointed and with a delegate appointed from each club a committee was formed to run the competition. The games are played at indoor Recreation centres aligned with each club and the fixtures try to follow the South West Football League fixtures as close as possible. An umpiring panel was established by the Region Umpire Development Officer and has produced many talented young umpires who are able to perfect their skills on high level games.

The SWNFL has just completed its eighth successful season and has gone from strength to strength with ten clubs now involved.  Three grades are run with 17 & Under, Reserves and Open and in 2013 a record crowd of 560 watched the Grand Finals for each grade. A planning meeting is held at the end of each season where the Delegates review and improve the rules of the competition to ensure that the competition gets stronger each year.
